Can you steam clean hardwood floors?

Maintaining the timeless beauty of hardwood floors often leads homeowners to ask: Can you steam clean hardwood floors? The answer is a definitive yes, provided your floors are properly sealed. Unlike traditional mopping which leaves puddles, high-quality steam cleaners use "dry steam" to sanitize surfaces instantly.

The science of dry steam

The main concern many people have is that using steam will create excess water that could damage their floors. But, dry steam actually contains less than 5% water and will NOT damage sealed wood. Yet, the high temperature breaks down dirt and bacteria without soaking the wood fibers. It is important to use a microfiber cloth when steam cleaning sealed hardwood floors, but there is no risk of damage to the wood and this effective cleaning method will make your floors look fantastic!

Check out our sections on floors in our article on tips on how to use your home or commercial steam cleaner.

Step-by-step guide to cleaning wood floors

  • Prep: Vacuum or sweep to remove abrasive grit.

  • Equip: Use the Neat™ Steam Cleaner with the rectangular floor tool.

  • Insulate: Attach a thick microfiber cloth. This acts as a heat buffer and traps the lifted dirt.

  • Technique: Move in the direction of the wood grain. The heat kills 99.9% of bacteria naturally.

  • After: When the microfiber cloth is saturated with dirt, simply toss it in your washing machine.

Ta-dah!

Your sealed hardwood floors will be super clean and streak-free in no time.
