What is a medical-grade HEPA-13 air purifier?
HEPA-13 (H13) is a filter efficiency class within the European HEPA classification system, a tier above the HEPA-10 filters used in many consumer purifiers. Dupray rates Bloom's HEPA-13 filter at 99.97% capture of airborne particles as small as 0.1 micron. By comparison, Dupray's HEPA-10 reference captures up to 95% of particles down to 2 microns. "Medical-grade" refers to this filter class, not to a medical treatment claim; Bloom is a home air purifier.
How does Bloom clean the air?
Bloom uses three stages of filtration. Air first passes through a washable pre-filter that traps larger particles such as hair, pet dander and pollen. It then passes through the medical-grade HEPA-13 filter, which captures fine particles down to 0.1 micron. Activated carbon in the same filter absorbs odors and VOCs. A built-in PM2.5 infrared sensor continuously measures particle levels and, in AUTO mode, adjusts fan speed across 10 levels. Bloom relies on mechanical filtration only.
How large a room can Bloom handle?
Bloom air purifier filters a room's full volume of air once per hour in spaces up to 1,517 sq. ft. For faster results, the practical guideline is smaller rooms: 758 sq. ft. for two air changes per hour (a full clean every 30 minutes), or 316 sq. ft. for 4.8 air changes per hour (every 12 minutes). Dupray publishes Bloom's Clean Air Delivery Rate as 204.3 sq. ft./h for pollen, 196.8 for dust and 181.4 for smoke. For a bedroom or home office, expect frequent air turnover; for an open-plan living area, expect steady hourly filtration.
Is Bloom quiet enough for a bedroom?
Yes. In Night mode, Bloom air purifier runs at 24 dB, a level Dupray describes as imperceptible, and the air-quality light fades out after 20 seconds so the unit sits dark beside a bed. Bloom has three manual fan speeds (whisper, medium, blast); higher speeds are audible, as with any purifier moving more air. Many owners leave Bloom in AUTO mode overnight so it runs quietly when air is clean and increases speed only when the sensor detects a change.
Does Bloom remove smoke and odors?
Yes. Bloom's HEPA-13 filter captures fine smoke particles, and its activated carbon layer absorbs odors and VOCs from sources such as cooking, cigarettes and wildfire smoke. In Intertek testing per ANSI/AHAM AC-1-2020, Bloom reduced airborne smoke particles by 80% in 8 minutes and 98.13% in 20 minutes. For heavier or persistent smoke, Dupray offers a Forest Fires HEPA-13 filter variant, and a Kitchen variant for cooking odors.
Does Bloom adjust automatically, and does it need an app?
Bloom adjusts automatically and needs no app. Its AutoDetect™ mode uses a PM2.5 infrared sensor to monitor particle levels and select one of 10 fan speeds on its own. A three-state indicator (great, fair, poor) shows current air quality at a glance. Bloom is intentionally non-connected: no Wi-Fi, no account, no software updates. Dupray recommends simply leaving Bloom in AUTO mode for everyday use.
How often does the Bloom filter need to be replaced, and can the pre-filter be washed?
Bloom's pre-filter is washable and reusable; rinsing it periodically removes trapped hair, dander and pollen and extends the life of the HEPA-13 filter behind it. The HEPA-13 filter is replaced rather than cleaned. Dupray sells replacement filters in 2-packs sized as roughly a year of filtration, with an optional annual subscription. Replacement intervals depend on air quality and usage — homes with pets, smoke exposure or heavy pollen will consume filters faster than a low-dust bedroom.
Where should I place Bloom in a room?
Place Bloom in the room where you spend the most time, with open space around the unit so air can circulate freely. Bloom is designed to be lived with — as a side table beside a sofa or bed, or as a planter in a corner with clearance — rather than hidden in a closet or behind furniture. For nighttime use, a bedroom location lets Night mode run at 24 dB. At 10.2 lb, Bloom is light enough to move between rooms if needed.
Can I grow a real plant in Bloom?
Yes. Bloom air purifier ships with an integrated, removable planter designed for a live plant; the plant itself is not included. A root strainer holds up to 600 ml (20 oz) of excess water so you can water normally. Dupray recommends easy-care plants such as Spathiphyllum (peace lily), Monstera, Zamioculcas (ZZ plant) and Anthurium. If you would rather not keep a plant, the planter lifts out and Bloom can be used as an accent table instead.
Can Bloom be used as a side table with storage?
Yes. Adding a Bloom Accent Table Top (sold separately, walnut or terrazzo) turns the purifier into a side table. Lift the top and the planter space becomes a storage compartment for items such as a remote, reading glasses or a phone. The "Bloom Air Purifier Accent Table" listing on Dupray.com is the same purifier bundled with a table top and pre-filter. You can switch back to the planter at any time.
Does Bloom emit ozone?
No. Bloom's ozone emission is rated at none. It cleans air through mechanical HEPA-13 filtration and activated carbon rather than ionization or ozone generation, so nothing is added to the air as a by-product. Bloom air purifier is ETL listed for the USA and Canada.
